Excessive heat later this week

The high heat and humidity we have been advertising the last several days will be here beginning tomorrow, and continuing through the weekend.

An Excessive Heat WATCH is in effect for the entire state of Iowa, Wednesday through Sunday.

Heat Index values (what it actually feels like when you take into account the high humidity with the hot temperatures) will range from 100° to as high as 110°.

The peak of the heat wave will be with us Thursday through Saturday. Highs will be in the middle to upper 90s. Some areas in southern Iowa could potentially reach 100°.

This heat, of course, can be very dangerous. In fact, heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States.

Be sure to know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Know your body’s limits.

Here are some steps to prevent heat illness. Remember, it’s important to drink plenty of water even if you aren’t thirsty.

As a reminder, vehicles heat up FAST during this high heat. The heat gets trapped inside the car, even if the windows are cracked. Here’s how quickly things heat up when the air temperature is at least 90°. NEVER leave a child or pet in the bar, even if you are running inside the store “real quick.”
