First Time Ever

For the first time since modern record keeping began, there were no violent tornadoes in the United States in a calendar year.  A violent tornado is defined as an EF-4 or EF-5.

According to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), 1154 tornado reports were recorded for the year nationwide in 2018, with 84 from Iowa. The National Weather Service offices in Iowa took out duplicate reports of the same tornado and found that Iowa had 69 tornadoes in 2018.  This includes the EF-3 tornadoes that hit Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella….

….and Marshalltown.

You can read more about the 2018 Iowa tornadoes here.

Iowa averages 46 tornadoes per year with most being the weakest on the Enhanced Fujita scale. You can find Iowa Tornado Climatology information here.
