Columbus, Regina advance to Tuesday’s 1A soccer final

DES MOINES (KWWL) — The Waterloo Columbus Sailors used a pair of second half goals to punch their ticket to the class 1A state final with a 2-0 win over Sioux Center.

Following his record tying four goal performance in Thursday’s quarterfinal win, Columbus senior Saw Win Lin’s header gave the Sailors an early second half 1-0 lead. Brayden Noll added another on a scrum in front of the net minutes later.

The Sailors face Iowa City Regina in Tuesday’s final after the Regals knocked off conference foe West Liberty 3-1. The final is a re-match of the two teams that played for the 2012 title in which the Sailors won on a penalty kick shootout.

In class 2A, a second half goal by Luis Espino led Council Bluffs Lewis Central to a 1-0 win over Hudson United. The Pirates had a potential game tying attempt glance off the right post and out in the final minute.

Top ranked Xavier defeated Gilbert 2-0 to advance to face Lewis Central in the final.

In class 3A, Iowa City West senior Gada Ambo scored a pair of goals in a 3-1 defeat of Mississippi Valley Conference rival Cedar Rapids Washington. The Trojans will face top ranked Waukee in Tuesday’s 3A final.
