CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — West Sioux ended the game on a 21-0 run as the Falcons defeated Dike-New Hartford 52-38 in a wild back and forth 1A championship game.
Dike-New Hartford opened the game strong, looking for their first state title since the Dike Bobcats captured on in 1981. Wolverine quarterback Drew Sonnenberg tossed three first half touchdown strikes, one to Cade Fuller and a pair to Parker Kiewiet, to give DNH a 20-10 lead midway through the second quarter. They added an Isaac Jorgenson 42 yard field goal for a 31 point lead before West Sioux caught fire.
Falcon quarterback Hunter Dekkers threw a pair of touchdowns and Kade Lynott added a two-yard run on the ground as they scored 21 unanswered to take a 31-23 lead in to the 4th quarter.
DNH, however, didn’t back down as Sonnenberg hit Kiewiet on a 32 yard strike early in the final frame. The two-point conversion tied the game at 38 apiece. West Sioux fumbled away the ensuing kickoff allowing Wolverine running back Cade Bennett to score a go-ahead touchdown for a seven point lead with 8:55 left to go.
The defense, however, couldn’t hold Dekkers down the stretch as he hit Lynott for two more scores and ran for another to give the Falcons a second straight state title.
Dekkers threw for 391 yards and five touchdowns with a pair of interceptions in the championship win. Sonnenberg led Dike-New Hartford with 242 passing yards and four scores to go with three interceptions. Kiewiet finished with 140 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
