Basketball to stop the violence

Two Waterloo men are hoping to use basketball as a means of stopping the violence on the city’s eastside.

Dennis Moore and Earnest Owens have formed a summer basketball league with all the games being played at Sullivan Park in the heart of the community’s eastside.

Its a ten week league consisting of six teams with eight players ages 18 and up.

And all of the games are played on Saturday nights.

Moore and Owens are both life long Waterloo residents and felt motivated to do something.

Dennis Moore League Co-Founder    "We want to show the young people there is joy–there are things in life you can do to have fun other than violence so we are all about love and sportsmanship being nice to one another."

Earnest Owens, "This is something these guys been looking forward to since me and my partner here have been putting it together..so its going to be good Rick."

Dennis Moore. "One of the things that is mandatory is the two teams that play we circle up and we have prayer"

Sullivan League player Brandon Ross, "Growing up it was always a big part of our culture you know seeing the older guys seeing them play in the park I think that was the one thing that inspired me a lot driving around on Sundays seeing guys play pick up ball families back in the park it meant a lot"

The games are played on Saturday nights from 5-8pm.
