36 cats rescued from Des Moines home, woman arrested

DES MOINES, Iowa. (KWWL) – The Animal Rescue League of Iowa has pulled 36 cats from a Des Moines home.

Authorities say more cats still need rescued.

That’s according to our NBC affiliate, WHO-TV.

Police arrested 70-year-old Paula Schaefer, she is charged with five counts of animal neglect and one count of animal contest.

Rescuers are wearing protective suits and respirators while in the home. They say the smell from cat urine in the home makes the air too toxic. The home is allegedly filled with fleas, cockroaches, garbage and piles of cat feces.

All of the cats rescued have respiratory infections, and several other conditions connected to the condition of the home.

One kitten died from flea bites.
