Michelle Carter jailed after conviction upheld

(NBC) — A Massachusetts woman who, at 17, encouraged her 18-year-old suicidal boyfriend to kill himself through a series of text messages, was sent to jail today.

It has been nearly five years since Conrad Roy III died in his own truck of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Michelle Carter was originally sentenced in 2017 to 15 months in jail for involuntary manslaughter, but the judge allowed her to remain free while her case was appealed.

The Massachusetts Supreme Court upheld her conviction last week, holding her responsible for actions that led to Roy’s death.

Carter’s attorney had urged the judge to allow her to remain out of jail while they took her case to the U.S. Supreme Court. But the judge ruled Monday that she should start her sentence.
