DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) — One of Waterloo’s elementary schools was given the 2019 Healthiest State Education Award Thursday by the Healthiest State Initiative.
Irving Elementary was recognized for its efforts to improve the physical, social and emotional well-being of its students and staff. The award was $5,000.
Some of the noteworthy accomplishments from Irving include: creating a before-school exercise club; eliminating unhealthy snacks; and incorporating heart rate monitors into physical education classes.
The Healthiest State Annual Awards recognize communities, workplaces, schools and individuals from across the state. Each winner is granted a monetary gift to continue their work focused on improving the health and well being of their employees, students or citizens.
