WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) — Some compassion is brewing across the country for victims of the worst wildfire in California history.
Seven breweries teamed up on Giving Tuesday to mix up a new beer by Sierra Nevada called “Resilience” from which all sales will go towards helping victims of the ‘Camp Fire’ in California. The breweries met at Singlespeed Brewing Company in Waterloo Tuesday morning, Singlespeed owner Dave Morgan reached out to his brewer friends to help make and sell the beer.
“There wasn’t a brewery that didn’t say yeah thats an awesome idea. It was easy,” said Morgan.
Morgan said on a typical day they make about 620 gallons of beer.
“For us that’s quite a bit of beer, and I didn’t see how we could easily flow through that beer in a short period of time, and what we want to do is get the money out where it can do some good, we don’t the money just sitting here or beer sitting here,” Morgan said.
Morgan said he responded to Ken Grossman’s call for help. Grossman is the owner of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, based in Chico, California which is only a few miles west of Paradise, the city drastically devastated by that wildfire.
“It’s to rebuild the town of Paradise, its to help rebuild the infastructure of everything there within the city, its to help the reforestation to take things back to its orginal position and its to help those families that have absolutely nothing at this point in time,” said Brian DeBold, an area manager for Sierra Nevada.
DeBold said more than one thousand brewers mixed the special beer nationwide
Morgan said they couldn’t have made a difference in Eastern Iowa without the help of his fellow brewers.
“It’s pretty cool we got the guys from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Coralville, Dubuque that just immediately rallied around the cause,” said Morgan.
The following Eastern Iowa breweries partnered with Singlespeed:
Lionbridge Brewing Company – Cedar Rapids
Backpocket Brewing – Coralville
Jefferson County Ciderworks – Fairfield
Big Grove Brewery – Iowa City
Pulpit Rock Brewing Company – Decorah
Dimensional Brewing – Dubuque
The beer will likely be ready to sell on draft only by the end of December.
