WASHINGTON, (KWWL) – Sen. Chuck Grassley released the following statement after President Trump’s address to the nation about the humanitarian crisis at the Southern border.

“The humanitarian and security crisis at our border has gone on for too long. Lax enforcement of our immigration laws has encouraged scores of people to cross our porous border. Human traffickers exploit loopholes in our laws and smuggle thousands of women and children on dangerous journeys. Many migrants are subjected to abuse and starvation along the way. Cartels and gangs such as MS-13 bring drugs and violence to our communities. In the midst of a drug epidemic in the United States, we’ve seen an influx of drugs coming across the border. Customs and Border Protection have apprehended an alarming number of known criminals and gang members who have illegally crossed into our country in recent years. And the number of family units who have put their lives in the hands of human traffickers is at an all-time high. The statistics speak for themselves: We have a real humanitarian crisis on the Southern border.

“Congress must eliminate incentives that fuel the black market of smugglers and drug traffickers who prey on the most vulnerable. We have a duty to enforce the existing laws that promote national security and legal immigration. Funding the government and securing our border should not be mutually exclusive priorities. Nor should they be partisan issues. President Trump is taking a stand to build upon border security methods that have already proven effective and have previously been supported by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. The American people deserve an open and functioning government that protects its borders, and I hope those Members of Congress who have supported border security in the past will once again do so now.”
