Hy-Vee hands out 300 free hams in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Ia (KWWL) — This holiday season Hy-Vee grocery stores will hand out more than 5,000 hams for free.

On Monday, in Iowa City, first responders assisted Hy-Vee employees in handing out 300 of the hams to people outside the Iowa City police substation.

Hy-Vee partnered with Hormel Foods to give away 5,250 hams in 19 cities across the Midwest.

This is apart of Hy-Vee’s second-annual “Hams for the Holidays” campaign and it was the first time Iowa City was selected.

“That’s the protein that everybody wants and sometimes the protein that’s most expensive. So, to be able to provide the center plate for them, it really means a lot. Everybody is on a tight budget during the holidays and being able to provide just a little portion of their meals, is really gratifying,” Hy-Vee Store Director Jan Nichols said.

Hy-Vee allotted two hours of time to pass out the hams but it only took about 15 minutes for them give away every single one.

Hams were also handed out on Monday in Des Moines.

Tomorrow, Hy-Vee will hand out more in Davenport at 4 p.m. at Goose Creek Park.
