DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) — Iowa residents can fish without a license this Friday, June 7th through the 9th.

Not just an ag state

When you think of Iowa the first thing that comes to mind may not be fishing, but the Iowa DNR says there are many great bodies of water to fish on like lakes, ponds, and of course rivers.

Scott Gritters, a fishery biologist for the Iowa DNR says especially living right on the Mississippi River, Iowa anglers are lucky.

“A lot of people think Iowa is an agricultural state, and it certainly is, but it has great fishing, especially in Northeast Iowa. We’re so blessed to have so many opportunities. We can go trout fishing, we can fish on the Mississippi River, when its not flooded, and we even have some lake opportunities.”

For first timers

The Iowa DNR says this weekend is a great way to encourage people, who may not fish very often or at all, to check out all the fishing opportunities Iowa has to offer. It is also a great time to take your kids fishing for the first time.

Gritters says the DNR puts on this license-free weekend to promote fishing because he says those that do so regularly are more likely to care for Iowa’s waterways.

“We have a free fishing weekend and we try to promote fishing just to try to get people engaged with the outdoors. We think our anglers are more attuned to be environmentally conscious, more caring about our rivers, our environment, if they do fish.”

Where to fish

The DNR is hosting various fishing events, especially for kids, to get people outdoors to fish for free this weekend. You can find a full list of these events and where they are located on the DNR’s website here.

The DNR’s website also has a list of the best places to fish anytime of the year, you can find those areas on their website as well.

Gritters says even though you do not need a license to fish this weekend, you do still need to follow the fishing rules and regulations set by the DNR.

If after the weekend of free fishing you find yourself wanting to renew or apply for a fishing license the Iowa DNR is making it easier than ever. You can get a license right from your phone with a new phone application called Go Outdoors Iowa. You can download the app from the Apple App store or Google Play now. Or you can go here to download the app online.
