DYERSVILLE, Iowa (KWWL) – ‘Field of Dreams’ is celebrating a big milestone. 30 years ago, the popular baseball classic first hit theaters.

CORNER OF FANTASY AND REALITY

For many, the movie is about so much more than baseball. It’s a story of perseverance, second chances, redemption and pursuing one’s dreams.

They built it, and three decades later, fans from around the world are still coming to the iconic baseball field.

In fact, Roman Weinberg, the Director of Operations at the movie site, said more than 115,000 people visit Dyersville site each year.

The movie was released on April 21, 1989. Since then, generations who grew up watching the film are bringing their children to visit the movie site.

“A lot of people would anticipate that attendance or popularity of the movie has gone down,” Weingberg said. “But it’s one of those rare films that continues to just persevere through time and that people always find that connection with.”

‘IS THIS HEAVEN?’

Back in the late ’80s, Field of Dreams production crews were looking at several locations to film. Weinberg said Lansing Farm was the perfect spot. The sunset over the field and the bridge over the creek sealed the deal.

Weinberg said the movie has stood the test of time. Its legacy and message continue to live on.

As far as the movie site goes, he told KWWL more people are visiting each year, if you can believe it. Everyone who goes gets something different out of it. Some are looking for inner peace. Others are finding a connection with family.

30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The movie site is having an official 30th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 15. Gates open at 10:30 a.m.

Activities include: local food vendors, inflatable bounce house, live music, contests and tours. Dwier Brown, who played the part of John Kinsella, will make a special appearance. There will also be a softball game at 7 p.m. between the Iconic Ghost Players and the Iowa Dream Team.
