POLICE: Names released after deadly SUV vs. train accident

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. (KWWL) – Cedar Rapids Police were called to a train vs. vehicle accident around 4:30 Sunday afternoon.

Crews were called to 3000 C St. southwest for the accident.

Police say an SUV was struck by a train.

We don’t yet know if there are any injuries.

UPDATE: Cedar Rapids Police confirm two people are dead following Sunday’s crash.

When police arrived, they found both people in the SUV to already be dead.

The names are being withheld pending family notification.

UPDATE: Police have now identified the two people who were killed Sunday, following an accident involving a SUV and train.

Police have identified a 32-year-old Ely man, Ethan Mortensen, as the driver of the vehicle. His passenger, also from Ely has been identified as 66-year-old, David Mortensen.

The accident remains under investigation, as police await autopsy results from the Linn County Medical Examiner’s office, according to Cedar Rapids Public Safety Officer, Greg Buelow.

According to Police both were killed after their 2012 Chevrolet Equinox was stuck by an eastbound Union Pacific train on C Street SW.
