City issues safety reminder for bikes, scooters in downtown Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) — The City of Cedar Rapids has issued a reminder of the appropriate places to ride bicycles, scooters, and skateboards in the downtown area.

Scooter, bicycles, and skateboards are not permitted on sidewalks in the downtown core between 1st Ave and 16th Ave, and between 6th St. West and 10th St. East, according to a press release.

These areas in the downtown’s core feature, ‘Walk Your Wheels’ sidewalk decals to help reminder riders. According to the release, these areas have a high volume of pedestrian traffic that is often coming in and out of businesses.

That is why the city recently installed and updated designated bicycle lanes throughout the downtown. Scooters and skateboard riders should also utilize these lanes.

Right now there is a pilot program of scooters in the downtown area. According to the city, more than 10,000 scooter rides have already been logged on the system’s 30 scooters since August 30th.

To report a user riding a bike or scooter on a sidewalk in the downtown core, call the Cedar Rapids Police Department’s non-emergency number, 319-286-5491.
