Iowa City man facing charges after allegedly assaulting the mother of his 9-month-old child

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) — A 33-year-old Iowa City man is facing charges after an argument with the mother of his child got violent.

According to a criminal complaint, Nikolas Petersen slammed the woman down onto a bed, wrapping his forearm and bicep around her neck after getting into an argument.

The woman is the mother of his 9-month-old child.

The complaint goes on to say Petersen was squeezing her neck to the point of cutting off circulation, the woman said she began blacking out.

The woman screamed to SIRI to call 911, however, Petersen allegedly took her phone to prevent it from making the call.

She continued to scream to alert her neighbors which woke up the baby. She eventually ran to the kitchen to grab a knife to defend herself, then attempted to hide with the baby.

Petersen allegedly said he “didn’t care” if she stabbed him when he continued to approach her.

According to the complaint, when Petersen left, he took the woman’s iPad and $500 from cash from her wallet.

He’s now facing charges for obstruction of emergency communications, child endangerment, theft 2nd degree, and domestic abuse assault impeding air/blood flow.
