Charges updated after victim in Dec 19th Pointe Apartment shooting dies

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) — A 30-year-old man is now facing a murder charge after a man he allegedly shot at a Cedar Rapids apartment complex died months later.

The shooting took place back on December 19th, 2018. Officers were called to Miami Drive at 3 a.m. where they found a 19-year-old female who had sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

Officers were advised that another shooting victim, 27-year-old Tyrice Douglas, was at Park Towne Court NE. Police officers found Douglas who had sustained multiple, life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital.

Police later arrested 30-year-old Ezekiel Phillips Jr. for the shooting. He was taken into custody after a traffic stop.

According to court documents, a witness identified Phillips as the man who entered the apartments at Park Towne Court NW and fire multiple shots at the victims.

Douglas died months later on May 6th at 4:15 a.m. At the time Cedar Rapids Police was awaiting autopsy results before updating Phillips charge.

Phillips was first charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of willful injury, going armed with intent with a dangerous weapon.

Now, Philips is also facing a 1st-degree-murder charge after Douglas died from his injuries. His bond has been increased to $1 million cash only.

The trail for attempted murder was scheduled for Sept. 30th.

According to Douglas’ obituary, he was a father of three. He was a graduate from Metro High School and coached youth football and basketball.
