Motorcyclist injured by falling mattress

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) – One person is injured after a falling mattress causes a motorcycle accident.

It happened just after two o’clock on Monday afternoon.

Felipe Lopez was traveling westbound on Highway 20 with a mattress strapped to the back of his vehicle. The ratchet strap holding the mattress became loose and caused the mattress to fall into the road.

Judith Towell was driving behind Lopez when the mattress fell. Towell slammed on her breaks to avoid hitting the mattress; as she did not have enough room to swerve into another lane.

Bruce Durband was travelling behind Towell on his motorcycle when she hit her brakes. Durband hit the back of Towell’s vehicle and was ejected from his motorcycle.

Durband was taken to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center. He was treated for a cut near his left eye and a broken wrist.

Lopez was cited for spilling loads on highways.
