Iowa City man jailed after threatening woman, stabbing her twice during domestic incident

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) — A 35-year-old Iowa City man is in jail after threatening to kill a woman in the presence of her daughter.

According to a criminal complaint, Bryant Welch was involved in a domestic dispute with his live-in girlfriend when things got violent.

The document alleges the two were in the kitchen when Welch grabbed a knife from the victim’s knife block and stabbed her behind her ear.

After stabbing the victim Welch allegedly told her, “I told you If you cheat on me, I’d kill you”.

According to police, the victim’s daughter came into the room to check on her mom. Welch approached the daughter with the knife when she refused to leave the room.

Welch and the victim then got into a car where he strangled her multiple times.

According to the documents, the victim feared for her life throughout the domestic incident.

Welch also took the victim’s phone after bitting the victim twice, strangling her, and stabbing her twice.

Welch has two previous domestic convictions from Illinois and Indiana.
