Dubuque Police warning about a Microsoft scam

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) – The Dubuque Police Department has reported that several people have received different variations of a scam involving scammers who say they are from Microsoft.

Some victims have reported a pop-up message on their computer telling them to call a specific number while others pick up a scam phone call. The scammers tell people that their computers have a virus or other problem. The scammers want the victims to visit a website and download a program which contains malware.

This program allows the scammers to remote access the person’s computer. The scammers say they can fix your computer problem which will cost you a fee.

The Dubuque Police have highlighted a particular website about tech support scams and how to avoid them: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/intelligence/support-scams.
