Showing pride for our state…

A Cedar Valley man has dedicated his time to showing how passionate people are about Iowa. He’s created “Iowa Love” shirts.

William Heathershaw was driving from Minnesota to Iowa. He saws, “There was the ‘People of Iowa Welcome You’ sign, and I thought it said love instead of Iowa. I thought about that for a long time.”

He eventually worked with designers to create the ‘Iowa Love’ optical illusion.

“50 percent of the people that we asked say it looks like Iowa and others say it looks like love,” he says.

It’s an idea Barn Happy Owner Kris Bulettger loved. She says, “When you have an Iowa Love shirt and you’re traveling and someone says you’re from Iowa, oh is that where they grow potatoes? The corn state. And you say no, well actually let me tell you about Iowa. People get to talk about their state. That’s why people love the shirt.”

With the help of his family, and others in the community, Heathershaw has been selling these shirts for several months. Even Heathershaw’s 93-year-old grandma helps with the business.

“I have come to find out a lot of people find a deeper meaning in that there is a lot of love for Iowa,” he says. “Iowans are hardworking and wanting to see the best for their families and their communities. It’s the people.”

Half of the money raised from the shirts goes to Cedar Valley nonprofits. Originally, the money was going to help victims of flooding in Iowa. Now, the money is helping a number of nonprofits in the area. Recently, they donated $1,950 to Rodney’s Kitchen to help with their sack lunch program. Rodney has been doing his free sack lunch program again this summer. Kids can grab lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. He’s doing this for one more week.
