Family rescued from river in Winneshiek County

DECORAH, Iowa (KWWL) – Eleven kayakers were rescued by the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

The kayakers were stranded on an island in the Upper Iowa River near Chimney Rock Park. The sheriff’s office says one kayaker had overturned their kayak and was hanging onto tree branches as they waited for rescue.

Decorah Fire and Rescue used a drone to locate the kayakers and rescue them.

Family members ranged in age from 6 to 71 years old.

The Iowa Department of National Resources and the Iowa Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
