‘Walk Your Wheels’ signs going up around Cedar Rapids, reminding riders of rules

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) — The City of Cedar Rapids is putting up signage in areas such as Downtown and Newbo to remind riders to obey a newly passed ordinance outlining rules for the road for bicyclists.

The decal signs are going in around Downtown, NewBo, Czech Village, and Kingston Village Districts.

According to the new ordinance passed in preparation of the new bike share program, bikes, scooters, and skateboards are restricted from using the sidewalks. In areas like NewBo riders are to use bike lanes and are permitted to use the full travel lane if needed.

In a press release, the city said this is part of a public education program designed to encourage pedestrian safety.

The city is also encouraging riders to wear helmets, stay alert, yield to pedestrians, and use hand signals before turning.
