Law enforcement puts out boating safety tips, ahead of Memorial Day weekend

(WHO) — Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to boating season, and Metro officials are reminding Iowans of important boating safety tips.

Law enforcement says the number one rule is: always wear a life jacket. They also said its a good idea to make sure the life jacket is the right size.

In case of an emergency, officials say know your location on the water, and be safe, if you plan on drinking.

“Have a fun time while you’re out there but make sure, if you’re the boat operator, you’re responsible for the safety of everyone on your vessel. So, not only do you need to have a life jacket but you need to wear your life jackets. Make sure everyone has a good plan for warm weather with plenty of liquids and things while you’re out,” said Lieutenant Tristan Johnson of the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recommends taking a boating safety course before hitting the water.
