DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) – School safety has been a priority concern for many students and parents. And now, the Dubuque Community School District is looking into an innovative approach to keep their students safe.

In any emergency situation, every second counts. Which is why the school district is looking into a solution to limit the amount of time it takes for first responders to get to their schools.

The district wants to link the security cameras in their schools to the police headquarter stations. It is a project that has been in the works for about a year.

Coby Culburtson, Director of Technology for Dubuque Community School District, said that this would allow police to view school footage in live-time.

“That in the event something would take place the emergency responders and law enforcement need to look at the cameras in our facilities that they should be able to do that in real time,” said Culburtson.

Mike Cyze, Director of School and Community Relations for Dubuque Community Schools, said that the district is always looking for new ways to improve safety.

“For us really its about how do we continue to look at all of those layers of safety and all of those layers of security in our buildings,” said Cyze.

Currently, police can only view pre-recorded footage from schools. The district and the city are still working out the logistics for the project.

“We really talked about some of the events that have taken place and how we can really capitalize on those seconds in an emergency crisis,” said Culburtson.

However, another safety addition will be added to the district this fall. Soon, teachers and staff will have a cell phone app that will allow them to call emergency reponders with just a click of a button.

“We will provide staff in our schools with an app on their phone that will allow them to initiate an emergency call if there were an emergency situation,” said Cyze.

There is not a definitive timeline as to when the school will finish with their security camera project.
