(NBC)– Two brave children are probably tired, cold, but safe and alive after a daring rescue.  The young children were met with an embrace from their frantic father, after spending the night alone, in British Columbia’s back country.

It was supposed to be a day of hiking, but quickly turned into a terrifying nightmare when the family got lost. The dad became injured and went to go get help, forcing him to leave behind his 7-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter.

By the time the father finally got a cellphone signal and called for help, it was dark.  Rescuers spent all night searching for the kids. Eventually, they came across a backpack and some shoes leading them to the siblings.

“You don’t want to give up. You’re hoping you’ll hear this little voice in the darkness,” said Coquitlam Search and Rescue team member, Al Hurley.

When they found them,  they were huddled near a creek. The children were treated for minor injuries, but none-the-less they are reunited and relieved to be back at home with their mom and dad.
