U.S. Department of Agriculture says female farmers on the rise

The number of female farmers is on the rise. That’s according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Jaclyn Wypler is a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin. She says that the census carried out by the Department of Agriculture did not include gender numbers until 1978.

She credits the change we’re seeing to census reformatting. Wypler said she wants to continue to see more growth by women in the agriculture industry.

She says, “Although it’s very exciting to see the growth, there are a lot of women who are still needing further data collected on them, so that their experiences can be known.”

Wypler said the census doesn’t account for undocumented female farmers, or farmers who identify as LGBTQ. She says that in the future she hopes data will give a more accurate representation of the agriculture community.
