IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) – One person is hospitalized after being shot by Iowa City Police during a burglary investigation.
A news release from the department says officers responded to a burglary alarm at 2:27 Thursday morning at 538 Olympic Court.
Two officers discharged their firearms, striking one person who is currently in the hospital. No officers were injured according to the release.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating.
This is a developing story, stay with KWWL as we learn more.
UPDATE: This all happened at an Iowa City consignment store, The Second Act.
According to DCI Special Agent Ryan Herman, at this time they believe the person who was injured was the only one involved in the burglary. However, DCI agents are investigating the incident.
At this time DCI is waiting to interview the officers involved.
The business owner of Second Act, Melissa Williams tells KWWL someone broke through a side window and stole their cash register.
“We discovered that the window was broken out on the west side of the building and somebody came in and took our cash register, threw a lot of things around inside of the store. They seemed to be in a hurry they went out of the front door,” said Williams.
Today they were unable to open up shop as they were busy resecuring the business.
According to Wiliams, this isn’t the first time the business has been broken into and now she’s more concerned about safety in the area.
“The first thing that always goes through my mind is how important it is to have two people working at the end of the day when we lock up. We have young people who work for us and it just redefines how important that is to not leave kids alone running a business. This neighborhood, you know, has some crime in it,” said Williams.

UPDATE: We now know the name of the people involved in an officer-involved shooting.
Iowa City Police tell us Officer Travis Neeld, Officer Alex Stricker and 34-year-old Michael Arturo Cintron Caceres were the ones involved.
We’re told the officers responded to two burglar alarms at Pizza Hut in Iowa City. While investigating, they say Caceres was located in a fenced area at Big Ten Rentals. That’s where shots were fired.
This is still under investigation and the two officers remain on administrative leave. We’re told that’s police department policy.
Caceres has been charged with two counts of Robbery 1st Degree. He remains in the hospital.
