(NBC)– Cake and presents are all standard for a birthday party, but some children have never experienced the joy of being surrounded by people who love and celebrate them.

However, a 16-year-old is trying to change that. Tanvi Barman from California started a nonprofit called, No Birthday Left Behind. The program provides children living in homeless shelters with a day of celebration.

The idea came at a young age when she volunteered at a homeless shelter . Barman explains what inspired her to start the organization,

“I used to hang out with the kids there and eat breakfast and one time I asked them when is your birthday party coming up and they didn’t really respond.”

The teen works with five different shelters and says she’s thrown at least 30 parties, so far.
