JESUP, Iowa (KWWL) – One eastern Iowa town is losing its only grocery store. The owners of Jesup Food Center say it will be closing in just a few weeks.
Co-owner Gary Urban says, “This store has been an important part of Jesup for approximately 45 years, maybe even 50.”
He adds, “We would have loved for this to succeed, but we didn’t have the magic sauce or the secret sauce to make this a success.”
Another owner, Dolan Burreson, says their stores in other towns are staying open. Only the one in Jesup is closing because it’s no longer economically feasible for them to keep that one open.
The owners say they believe the closest grocery stores to Jesup will be in Evansdale and Independence after this store closes.
Urban says, “It’s for sure a lot more fun putting it together and filling the shelves, instead of tearing it apart, so yeah it is a sad moment.”
The owners say they’re still hoping someone might come forward and try to purchase the store. The owners say they’ve been trying to sell the store for around two years.
