An Ames man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing his dog and leaving it in a dumpster

AMES, Iowa (WHO)–20 year old Rashidi Simba was arrested Friday and charged with animal torture.

Ames Animal Control says a homeless man looking through a dumpster last Friday and found the dog. He called the police who then called animal control.

The dog is named Moose, after he was found with a moose stuffed toy next to him. Word of his recovery has spread quickly.

Simba faces up to two years in prison and thousands in fines. A piece of legislation that will strengthen animal abuse has cleared its senate committee.

Ames Animal shelter says they’re in need of donations, as Moose’s vet bills will end up being thousands of dollars.

More information on how to help Moose can be found on the Ames Animal Control Facebook page.
