Felon voter rights amendment dies in committee

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) – An amendment that would have restored voting rights for felons won’t make it through the second funnel in the Iowa Legislature according to a new release from Governor Kim Reynold’s office.

“I am disappointed in today’s setback, but I will not give up the fight for Iowans who deserve a second chance. It’s encouraging to have a strong coalition of supporters backing our proposed constitutional amendment. There’s more work to do, but I am committed to getting this done,” said Reynolds in that same news release.

The Senate Judiciary Committee declined to vote on the amendment before the funnel deadline on April 5th.

The House had passed the amendment 95 – 2.
