Waterloo Schools superintendent voices voucher concerns to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos visited the state Friday to meet with Governor Kim Reynolds to garner support for a bill that would provide vouchers to certain students to attend private schools, or for home school costs.  Waterloo Schools superintendent, Dr. Jane Lindaman, was invited to join them.

Lindaman took the opportunity to voice her concerns to Secretary DeVos about the school freedom bill.

“Our district has made significant gains in graduation rate, early literacy and opportunities for advanced programming. Voucher programs can be packaged under many names, but the basic premise is typically the same. Public schools serve 94% of children. Programs that divert dollars away from public education always catch my attention,” said Lindaman.

Lindaman has voiced her objection of diverting funding from public education through vouchers in the past and was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with DeVos in person Friday.  Lindaman, though, was the only public school administrator in the state invited to participate.

“I urged both the Governor and Secretary DeVos to ensure that representatives from public education are at the table, including public school educators and parents,” said Lindaman.  “If we wish to mitigate the shortage of skilled workers, the allocations of funds should be targeted proportionately to public schools not only because of the sheer volume of students we serve, but also because the future of Iowa rests on the success of public education.”

“I was very thankful to be at the table because Iowa’s public schools were very under-represented.” – Dr. Jane Lindaman
