Family asking for help after veteran killed in Evansdale house fire

EVANSDALE, Iowa – An Evansdale man was sadly killed in a house fire two days ago.

30-year-old Albert Schmitt died in a fire on the 400 block of Morrel Avenue in Evansdale. The fire started around 3:30 Tuesday morning. Firefighters say part of the roof caved in.

Albert Schmitt was a loving husband, a father of two young kids and a veteran.

Wife Haley Schmitt says, “Make sure you live your life every day like it’s the last day that you’ll see someone.”

Albert’s son Benjamin is turning one this upcoming Monday. His nine-year-old daughter Carlee says, “I really don’t want anyone to miss him because he was a good man and I really love him.”

Albert was a veteran, and his wife says, “He served for 12 years, and he went overseas in 2016 for eight months. He recently left the Army in August.”

His family has NO life insurance benefits, SGLI coverage ended on the 2nd of January. We have raised so much so fast, Let’s see if we can raise what SGLI would of paid. $400,000.00 Please share and donate to pay for funeral and support his family.🙏 for his family. RIP Brother.
