FORT MADISON, Iowa (KWWL) – Staff members were assaulted by an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary Friday.

According to Cord Overton with the Iowa Department of Corrections, shortly before noon, a fire alarm was triggered in one of the living units.  While responding to the area, staff discovered one inmate had started a fire in his cell and used his mattress to barricade himself inside that cell.

The inmate attempted to punch the responding correctional officers, while they were trying to get the inmate out to extinguish the fire.  The staff used pepper spray to subdue the inmate.

Staff involved were treated for smoke inhalation and minor physical injuries.  The inmate is being treated for a self-inflicted injury.

This incident remains under investigation.
