WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) – Democratic Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack is weighing in, following President Trump’s address to the nation regarding the partial government shutdown and border wall.
Loebsack’s statement reads:
“The fact that we are in this position is completely unacceptable. If the president and Republican leaders in the Senate were serious, the government could easily be reopened. Currently, 800,000 federal workers are either furloughed or working without pay, including thousands in Iowa who are affected. The Senate did its job and now the House has acted in passing bipartisan legislation to fund the government, only to be undermined by the president and his obsession with an expensive and ineffective wall.
To be clear, all Americans believe we must secure our borders but playing politics and building a wall at the expense of taxpayers is not the answer to keeping Americans safe. To truly secure our border, Congress needs to invest in a variety of components, including additional agents and technology. It is past time that the bickering and games end. We need to pass a bipartisan immigration reform bill that secures our borders, enforces the rule of law and ensures accountability for those who came here illegally while not tearing apart families who have been here for many years. I am committed to working with anyone on either side of the aisle to advance a serious proposal that will for once and for all fix our broken immigration system.”
Loebsack serves the Second Congressional District which includes 24 counties in southeastern Iowa.
