CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Ellie Shimp is a competitive swimmer in Cedar Falls. For about as long as she can remember, swimming has always been important to her.
But this summer, she was involved in a jet ski accident while at Clear Lake. For around six months, she’s been getting around on crutches.
She says she has limited mobility in her lower left leg. “I have compartment syndrome in my leg, which is most there’s a lot of damage in most of the nerves in my leg from the knee down, so that affect my ankle mobility. Meaning I can’t pull up my foot or push it down myself.”
Ellie says the community and her swim team have helped her so much through this journey.
Now, Ellie is hoping to get an ExoSym Brace, so she can reach her full potential.
She says, “It has carbon rods in the back, so it can restore your energy, and you can run and jump and hike.”
There will be an “EllieStrong” Benefit on January 5th. It will be at the Hilton Garden Inn in Cedar Falls. Money raise from this benefit will help Ellie with medical expenses and help her family afford the brace.

This event is crucial to not only raising necessary funds to prepare for Ellie’s future medical needs but also to surround her with an abundance of hope and love. We will have a live and silent auction as well as live music by STACKHOUSE.”
