Helmon Betwell pleads guilty to murder in deadly 2015 attack

A Dubuque man pleaded guilty to murder on Thursday in a case tied to a woman’s death while she was on a walk more than three years ago.

According to our coverage partners at the Telegraph Herald, 22-year-old Helmon Betwell entered the guilty plea during a hearing in Dubuque County. Betwell was set to stand trial in Scott County starting on Monday, after several delays while his competency to stand trial was determined.

The victim in the case was 66-year-old Nancy Krapfl. Police in Dubuque say Krapfl was on an early-morning walk along West 17th Street on September 1, 2015 when she was sexually assaulted and killed. Betwell was 19 when he was arrested in connection with Krapfl’s death.

Betwell was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
