Community donates $20k in honor of beloved Waverly cyclist, secretary

Pam Druvenga was 60 when she as tragically killed during a freak bike accident earlier this summer.

The accident happened in June near Waverly, when Pam’s wheel and her husband’s wheel clipped each other.

She was wearing her helmet, but suffered severe injuries.

Now, Pam’s legacy lives on. She married her high school sweetheart, Randy Druvenga, and was just getting ready to retire when the accident happened.

Randy says, "The accident occurred on June 5th and she was set to reitre the end of June."

Randy recalls what happened that day. He says, "Pan touched my rear wheel. We were biking side-by-side, doing something we always love. Her wheel went too far to the left. She didn’t have to to extend an arm out for support. She had her helmet on. She did everything right. It was just an accident."

People in the community donated money in honor of Pam. In the end, all the donations added up to around $22,000. The Druvenga family decided to donate all of that money to the Waverly – Shell Rock Community School District.

"This supports classrooms, teachers and students in the K-12 grades," Randy says.

He tells KWWL the family is simply re-gifting all of the money people donated to them.

Pam was a middle school secretary, and she was, "the first smile that people and kids saw when they came into the building."

KWWL asked Randy what Pam would want people to take away from this story.

He says, "Small means can make a big difference in peoples’ lives. We underestimate the impact that we have on other people. Even just the small gestures, like a smile, can change someone’s day. Pam had a great smile."

A reminder that even a small donation, can turn into something amazing, like $22,000 to help an area school district.
