The owner of a local business is voicing her concerns over a large construction project.
Allison’s Dance Center is located along University Ave. in Cedar Falls.
The owner, Allison Meinert, said construction along University Ave. is dangerous for her young dancers and their families.
She said she’s owned her studio for a decade, and when construction first began, her major concern was her studio’s parking lot.
Meinert said she brought up her concerns to the city of Cedar Falls two summers ago. She told KWWL a project manager assured her construction wouldn’t affect parking. You can see a picture of their email exchanges.
Meinert said in the past few weeks, some parking spots have been completely coned off, and when the lot is busy, she said it’s hard to get through it safely.
With dance season starting in just a few weeks, Meinert said safety is her biggest concern.
"We have moms that are getting babies out of the car, and a two-year-old that dances and a 4-year-old who dances, maybe, and there will be a lot of vehicles also trying to come and go, and that person is trying to get their kid safely from their vehicle into the center," Meinert said.
Some students are not coming back this year because their families are concerned about construction, according to Meinert.
After reaching out to a project manager at Cedar Falls, the city said they visited the property Monday afternoon to make sure the contractors were working in the proper areas. She said they’ve also contacted Meinert to hear her concerns.
The city said this is a two-year construction project, which is slated to finish by the end of this year.
