Man leads Vinton police on chase, runs into woods

Authorities in Benton County are searching for a man with active federal warrants.

Vinton Police said the department was notified Wednesday by the U.S. Marshall’s service that Kody Joe Harris, 35, had active federal warrants and was traveling to Vinton.

Officers spotted Harris driving a car around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night. They followed him at a distance to prevent a vehicle pursuit, however when officers approached, Harris sped off. Officers said at some points Harris’ speed reached more than 80 mph.

After losing sight of his car, officers were told by witnesses that they observed him get out of his car and run into a woods near the Cedar River.

Harris is wanted by federal authorities for a probation violation and Vinton Police will be filing state charges against him as well. Harris is not believed to be violent, but could still be hiding in the Vinton area.

During a search of the woods, police did arrest Harris’ passenger April Nichole Baldwin, 37. Baldwin had an active warrant for her arrest from Linn County for a probation violation.
