Racist Wi-Fi name protected by 1st Amendment

AMES, Iowa — Someone’s racist Wi-Fi name is causing a stir in an Iowa community. But whoever created the name has constitutional protection.

Rarely does the name of a Wi-Fi network get a bad reaction, but that’s exactly what’s happening outside Iowa Sate University, because someone called their Wi-Fi network this: "Hang that ‘N-word’".

Nobody knows who’s behind it, but it’s based somewhere in the area of Lincoln Way and Welch Avenue. Ames Police say they’ve gotten multiple reports about it. However, there is nothing officers can do, because while it’s an objectionable racial slur, it’s protected by the First Amendment.

Police have reminded whoever’s behind this that free speech doesn’t make one immune from social consequences.

So far, there is no official word yet on who is behind the racial slur. Police say they hope they rename the Wi-Fi network.
