Witnesses tell KWWL they’re seeing search efforts happening in Poweshiek County, in what is apparently connected to missing 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts.
There is a presence of law enforcement, including the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, currently in action along Highway 21 — about 15 miles south of where the University of Iowa student vanished more than two weeks ago after going for a jog.
KWWL crews spoke to a farmer in the area, who says the crews have been searching the area — including his cornfields and buildings on his property — several times since Tibbetts went missing on July 18.
On Thursday, the farmer said the search picked back up around 8 a.m. and has stretched on throughout the day. He says divers were searching surrounding ponds on Wednesday, adding that there appears to be a lot of focus on one square mile stretch in the area.
Thursday night around 6:30 p.m., news crews from NBC affiliate WHO-TV in Des Moines reported seeing K9 searchers with the FBI in the area.
Investigators in the case have not said why this specific area in Poweshiek County could be under particular examination.
