Cedar Rapids Police identify 15-year-old Illinois girl found dead with gunshot wounds in crashed car

UPDATE: The victim in an apparent Cedar Rapids shooting Tuesday morning has been identified as 15-year-old Tyliyah L. Whitis of Peoria, Illinois. 

Whitis was found dead in a crashed car with gunshot wounds.

Cedar Rapids police have not yet received the official cause of death from the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner. They believe it was a targeted incident.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL)-- Cedar Rapids police arrived in the 2200 block of C Street S.W. early Tuesday morning to find a 15-year-old girl dead in the driver's seat of a vehicle.

They were responding to a report of a single-vehicle crash at the Hawthorne Hills Apartment Complex.

Authorities say she had what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Final determination as to the cause of death is pending per an autopsy scheduled with the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police say it appears to be a targeted incident.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
