CENTRAL CITY, Iowa (KWWL) - An honor float, not an honor flight, event was held to raise money for veterans.

Organizers from the AMVETS Post 37 welcomed folks to kayak down the Wapsipinicon River from Central City to Waubeek and raise money for national honor flights. The flights take local veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials of the fallen.

"It's our gift to them for their service that they've done in the past years," AMVETS Post 37 member Deb Becker said.

Last year's event was canceled due to COVID-19, and Saturday's event had a huge turnout compared to previous years.

"The last time we had it it was about 100 some people and I think were running close to the 300 mark this year so it's an awesome thing," Becker said."

The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will take off out of the Waterloo Regional Airport September 21. Last year's operations were also canceled due to the pandemic. Veterans scheduled to go on a flight in 20-20 will be contacted with instructions for the September flight.
