(KWWL) -- Thursday marks 12 years since Aplington-Parkersburg Head Football Coach Ed Thomas was shot and killed by a former player in the high school weight room.
In his 37 years as a head coach, Thomas led his teams to 292 victories, including two state championships. Four of his players had long and successful careers in the National Football League and in 2005, Thomas earned the prestigious NFL High School Football Coach of the Year award.
Thomas was much more than a coach, however, he was a man of faith and a leader of young people. One of the greatest examples of his leadership came after the devastating EF5 tornado that hit Parkersburg in 2008. He helped lead the town's healing by rebuilding the football field and fielding a team that fall on the field named in his honor.
Thomas' legacy lives on today through the Ed Thomas Family Foundation and the three pillars of faith, family and football.
