Man arrested for vandalizing cemetery, tries to sell vases for scrap

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (KWWL) – Police in Marshalltown have arrested a man for vandalizing a cemetery in the city.

Police arrested Larry Kunc Jr, 43, of Marshalltown, for Second Degree Theft and Third Degree Criminal Mischief. On Wednesday, June 16, police got a call for suspicious items turned in at a scrap yard. Employees noticed a large amount of grave monument vases and a bronze headstone marker.

Officers checked local cemeteries and found that the marker had come from the Rose Hill Cemetery and is valued at $8,272. The value of all the vases is unknown at this time or where the came from.

Police are now asking for the public's help in checking loved one's graves for additional damage or missing flower vases. Some of the vases taken were stone or acrylic instead of bronze. The scrap yard, Gervich and Sons, Inc., will keep the vases so they can be returned to the families.

Anyone with information should call the Marshalltown Police Department at 641-754-5725. Additional charges against Kunc are pending as the investigation continues.
