Driver cited in Cedar Rapids scooter crash, children remain hospitalized

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) - Police in Cedar Rapids have released more information related to a crash that seriously injured two children riding electric scooters on Wednesday, June 9th.

The collision happened just after 4 p.m. near 15th Street and Mount Vernon Road SE.

Police say the two boys were riding a VeoRide electric scooter in the alley between 15th Street and Camburn Court SE. The children travelled onto Mount Vernon Road SE where they were hit.

Officials say, according to witnesses and video evidence, the children did not stop at a stop sign before traveling onto Mount Vernon Rd.

Both children, an 8-year-old and 12-year-old, received life-threatening injuries. They were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where they remain hospitalized.

64-year-old Dennis Lee Candler of Cedar Rapids was cited for Driving While License Under Suspension and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability. There are currently no charges pending. Candler was not injured in the crash.
