DES MOINES (KWWL) - The Waverly-Shell Rock girls soccer team advanced to their third straight 2A title game Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Spencer. The Go-Hawks are looking for redemption after losing in the final game in 2019 and 2018.
WSR was down 1-0 early after goalie Katelyn Eggena mishandled a ball and Spencer's Brooke Moser made good on an open net. That is all the fun the Tigers would have, though, as Waverly came storming back.
Anna Stromberg evened things at 1 with a goal in the 25th minute, assisted by senior star Kenzie Rolling. In the 34th minute, Morgan Aikey netted a crossing pass from Macy Smith to make it 2-0. And Rolling added a third goal in the 38th minute to make it 3-1 at halftime.
“We really came together. We knew what we needed to do. We knew we had this game. If we find feet and control, we had the game in the bag," Stromberg said about the huddle they had at the 20th minute water break.
Rolling added two goals for a hat trick in the second half to make a final score of 5-1. Tuesday's goals upped her season total to 72.
Rolling had the lone goal in Waverly's quarterfinal, overtime thriller on Tuesday.
"From the first day of practice, we kind of set the tone between the older and younger people that we want to win this year," Rolling said.
Waverly will play Dallas Center Grimes in the championship at 12:30 on Friday.
