On May 22, 2021, at about 3:25 PM the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call regarding a possible drowning on the Mississippi River about one mile north of the Potosi Point.
The initial emergency response included boats from the Potosi Fire Department, State of Iowa DNR Wardens, Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office, Cassville Fire Department, Sherrill, IA Fire Department, along with civilian personnel in boats.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office investigator learned that Mitchell Hochhausen, 63, of rural Potosi, WI, and his wife, Beth, were with two of their grandchildren swimming on a sand beach island on the east side of the river channel.
Mitchell had swum out into the river to retrieve an item that had floated away from them.
According to statements from the witnesses, Mitchell had turned around to try and swim back in.
Mitchell was not able to make it back to the shallower waters and he went under the surface of the water before someone could get to him in a boat.
He was in about six feet of water at the time.
Rescuers searched using side-scan sonar and were able to locate Mitchell and he was recovered at about 7:28 PM.
He was pronounced dead at the boat landing by the Grant County Coroner.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Potosi Fire Department, Potosi EMS, Cassville Fire Department, “Catfish Bob” Haberkorn, the Iowa Department of Natural Resource Game Wardens, the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office, the Sherrill, IA Fire Department, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Game Wardens.
